After nearly a year of negotiations, leaders of three unions that represent 9,000 educators, clinicians and researchers have approved tentative agreements with Rutgers University.

You might be surprised to learn that a handful of companies are extracting as much as 60 million metric tons (t) of carbon dioxide per year from geological reservoirs. That’s pure CO₂ being pulled out of natural deposits for use up here on the surface.
Around 3% of this mined gas goes toward food and beverage, refrigeration, welding, lab gas, and other applications known collectively as the merchant CO₂ market, according to a 2014 report by the US Department of Energy. But most mined CO₂ is injected back into the ground to extract fossil fuels from depleted oil and gas fields, a process known as enhanced oil recovery.

Why would anyone pull CO₂ out of the ground when the whole world seems intent on doing the opposite?

Gov. Greg Abbott and Tesla CEO Elon Musk celebrated the groundbreaking of a $375 million lithium refinery Monday, praising the facility for advancing clean energy, keeping Texas independent and helping to prevent a bottleneck as Tesla ramps up production.
"It's important to address what we think is, as we look ahead a few years, a fundamental choke point in the advancement of electric vehicles," Musk said.

The refinery, located near Corpus Christi in the city of Robstown, is expected to be finished next year, with full production a year later. Musk said it would produce more battery-grade lithium than the rest of North America's refining capacity combined.

Houston-based commercial space company Nanoracks hoped its airlock on the International Space Station would open at least six times a year, becoming a door to push satellites into Earth’s orbit and to do experiments in the vacuum of space.
But after two years, the Bishop Airlock has only opened once. It expelled 172 pounds of space station trash to burn up in Earth’s atmosphere.

The ISS is a busy place, and commercial efforts must be worked into a full schedule with competing priorities, government agendas and geopolitical tensions. 

“I don't see it as any sort of major negative sign to the industry,” said Greg Autry, director of Arizona State University’s Thunderbird Initiative for Space Leadership, Policy and Business. “I do think it is obvious, though, that you can make a lot of investment and get a partnership agreement with NASA and then be stuck because of other operational or geopolitical issues.”

Blue Origin will develop the system that lowers astronauts to the moon for NASA's Artemis V mission, the third time astronauts walk on the lunar surface in NASA's current moon program.
The space agency said the announcement is aimed at boosting competition and redundancy for these human landing systems. It's also likely a response to the massive backlash NASA received in 2021 from Blue Origin and members of Congress when it selected SpaceX — and only SpaceX — to develop this system.

NASA is increasingly relying on commercial companies to own and operate space hardware. And Friday's news gives two prominent billionaires a lunar realm for battle: Jeff Bezos founded Blue Origin in 2000, and Elon Musk founded SpaceX in 2002.

Lafarge and Heidelberg select technologies for CO2 capture and utilization projects
Two construction-material firms have selected technology partners for facilities that will capture and use some of the carbon dioxide generated at their cement plants.

In British Columbia, Lafarge is adding a CO2-to-chemicals system from the start-up Dimensional Energy to CO2-capture pilot equipment from Svante that has operated at its Richmond Cement Plant since January 2021. Svante captures CO2 with solid sorbents based on metal-organic frameworks. When completed, the system will pull 1 metric ton (t) of CO2 per day from Lafarge’s cement facility and react it with hydrogen to yield roughly 180 L of hydrocarbon waxes. ... Read more in C&EN

Texas lawmakers have approved a space commission to better compete with Florida, Colorado and other states already capitalizing on the new era of space exploration.

The Ax-2 crew is back on Earth, ending a Houston company's second mission to the International Space Station.

A fire erupted inside the iconic Tiffany & Co. flagship location on Fifth Avenue in New York City on Thursday. 

Electrolyzers are the electrochemical cells that split water into hydrogen and oxygen. The systems occupy an industrial niche today but may be a crucial part of how the chemical industry and several other sectors decarbonize in the near future. Two electrolyzer types share the current growing market, and two more are rapidly commercializing. The next handful of years will tell the tale, as corporate targets and government subsidies look to create a new, green, hydrogen economy.

Tropical Storm Lee was forming east of the Lesser Antilles and was expected to rapidly intensify into an extremely dangerous hurricane by the weekend, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said in an advisory late on Tuesday.

The billionaire businessman made the comment on his social media platform X after CNN cited a excerpt from a new biography of Musk that says he ordered the Starlink network turned off near the Crimean coast last year to disrupt the Ukrainian sneak attack.

Authorities report escaped murderer Danelo Cavalcante has a new look and is still on the run on this 11th day of the manhunt. 
 
On Sunday morning, Pennsylvania state police report Cavalcante was last spotted near Phoenixville, PA, on a doorbell camera, about 20 to 30 miles north of the area of prior sightings around the world famous #LongwoodGardens. 
A few hours later, PA state police updated the public that he may no longer be in or around Phoenixville, PA.  PA state police posting on twitter, "Investigative leads have emerged that indicate Cavalcante is no longer in that area."

Earlier this morning, PA state police updated the public with Cavalcante's NEW LOOK:

-NEW LOOK: Clean shaven, Yellow/green hoodie, Black baseball cap, Green prison pants, White shoes 

Authorities say he may be driving a 2020 White Ford Van (PA ZST-8818).  The white van has a refrigerator unit on top and was allegedly stolen from a local dairy farm in Chester County.  

If Cavalcante is seen, authorities are asking the public to call 911 or a tip line at 717-562-2987.

Cavalcante escaped from a Chester County prison on August 31, 2023, about 2 weeks after he was convicted of first-degree murder in the killing of his ex-girlfriend.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Monday authorized updated COVID-19 vaccines from Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna that target a recently circulating Omicron variant of the coronavirus, paving the way for the launch later this week of a fall vaccination campaign.
A third shot, made by Novavax, is still under review by the FDA. Novavax said it did not expect its shot to be authorized in the United States before a meeting of a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advisory panel on Tuesday to recommend who should receive the updated vaccines.

UPDATE: NASA decided to name its new director of UAP research. It has tapped Mark McInerney for the job. McInerney previously served as NASA’s liaison to the Department of Defense covering limited UAP activities for the agency. 
FROM EARLIER: NASA has appointed a director to lead the agency’s research of unidentified anomalous phenomena – the new term for unidentified flying objects, or UFOs – but is not naming this person to protect them from harassment and threats.

It’s the agency’s first concrete step toward collecting better data that could determine if mysterious objects are balloons, planes, weather phenomena or extraterrestrial. It’s also an indication of the challenges NASA will face as it moves this conversation from sensational to scientific.

The industrial gas supplier Air Products has filed a lawsuit against the US government seeking to block the ongoing sale of the Federal Helium System. The firm is asking a US District Court for an immediate injunction pausing all proceedings and a set of judgments declaring the sale unlawful as currently structured. Air Products says the government’s plan will disrupt helium supplies and markets
The US Federal Helium System is a set of assets for storing, refining, and distributing helium. It includes a large geological dome formation near Amarillo, Texas; nearly 23 million m 3 of raw helium inside the dome; a set of pipelines that distribute helium to refining sites in Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas; and supporting equipment and infrastructure. The system, established in the 1920s to fill military dirigibles, currently supplies more than 9% of global helium demand.
