Southwest Airlines On Hotseat Over Holiday Meltdown

    Photo of Clayton SandellVerified
    · 11:19:46 AM EST
"Let me be clear, we messed up," says Southwest Airlines COO Andrew Watterson at an ongoing U.S. Senate hearing focused on the airline's holiday service meltdown. The airline is promising to do better. Watterson blames the airline's lack of "winter operations resiliency", saying inadequate de-icing operations helped lead to high rates of cancellation in Denver in Chicago, which led to cascading disruptions across the country. "This overwhelmed our crew scheduling processes and technology," Watterson says. "We had upgraded this system earlier in the year, but we're taking a fresh look at it and other systems of how we should improve. Ultimately, none of this is an excuse. We need to make sure our operational resiliency and technology are strengthened for future extreme weather events, no matter how unprecedented. We owe that to our customers and to our employees."
